2013 Clarity Data Item 02: Teacher professional development

How much time each year do teachers in the Prairie Lakes AEA region spend on technology-related professional development? And how do they perceive the quality of that time?

2013 Clarity Data 02

n = 1,138 teachers

School-provided PD = inservices, summer/after school classes, mentoring, peer coaching…
Non-school formal PD = degree programs, conferences, workshops, seminars…
Non-school informal PD = blogs, videos, social networks, webinars…

Over half of Prairie Lakes teachers reported that they spent 8 hours or less in school-provided technology learning experiences. One out of every six had no technology PD time whatsoever. Those percentages are even lower for the other two categories. For example, despite the wealth of resources that exist online, 44% of teachers said that they participated in no informal technology learning at all last year. Similarly, 45% of teachers said that their exposure to formal, non-school-provided technology learning was nonexistent.

Only about 1 in 4 teachers said that the quality of their school-provided technology learning experiences was ‘above average’ or ‘excellent.’ Those percentages are even lower for the other two categories.
