In July I had the opportunity to travel to Chicago with one of our PLAEA teachers from Spirit Lake, Leka DeGroot, and be trained as an affiliate with Code.org so that we can better support implementation of computer science in the area.
Since then I’ve had the opportunity to meet with teachers all over PLAEA to discuss what coding might look like in different classrooms across the area – some elementary, some middle school – some one-on-one, some small groups.
It’s been great getting to meet with teachers to design at personalized levels, but last Friday I finally got to host my first workshop! We practiced teaching lessons from Code.org’s curriculum, discussed equity in the classroom – beyond just computer science, and worked on puzzles in the Code Studio.
If you missed out and are interested in bringing coding and computer science to your building, there are always more opportunities! On November 10 my teammate, Meredith Allen, and I will be hosting a half day workshop on implementing “Hour of Code” at your school! I’ll lead another full day workshop in Pocahontas in the spring, but until then, if you have an individual need for your district, don’t hesitate to reach out and get in touch!
